Tottenham defender William Gallas believes recent results have shown the club are still not good enough to be considered among the Premier League's elite.

Spurs have seen their stranglehold on third in the table slip away in recent times, as they have watched arch-rivals Arsenal catch and then overhaul them as they now find themselves in a desperate fight for the fourth and final Champions League spot with Chelsea and Newcastle.

A chastening defeat to the Blues in the semi-finals of the FA Cup at the weekend only added to the sense of despondency around While Hart Lane - with Gallas admitting that the players are experiencing something of a crisis of confidence.

"I think we have to improve a lot," Gallas said, according to the Telegraph. "Even if we have good players and a good squad this result shows we are not ready yet."

He added: "The atmosphere is very bad - the mood is very down.

"Yes, everybody is worried because at the beginning of the season everybody was talking about us, saying we play good football, we can finish third, we are 10 points in front of Arsenal. Now we are five points behind them and we have lost the semi-final.

"It will be difficult because Chelsea and Newcastle are behind us and, after that victory, Chelsea will be very strong. I think they will finish very well so we have to finish well as well."

However, Gallas insists the questions surrounding the future of manager Harry Redknapp - who has been linked with the England job - have not been a cause behind the recent troubles.

"Nobody has been talking about what he will do next season," Gallas said. "His priority has been to get the team to qualify for the Champions League. So when the people start to speak about him for the national team he came to the dressing room and said: 'Guys, I am very focused on the Champions League and that's it'. "
