Departing AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso has revealed that he would like to return to Rangers next season, if they can come through their present issues.

Gattuso, 34, ended his 13-year association with Milan last weekend and would like to return to Ibrox, where he spent a year in 1997 - quickly becoming a fan favourite before a £4 million move to Salernitana.

"I'd like to play for Glasgow Rangers, that's my dream," Gattuso told Sportitalia."However, they are going through a complicated situation.

"I've spoken to some people who are looking to enter the club, but we'll have to see what happens next. They are not the only option.

"I'm not bothered about money. I want an experience that will touch me emotionally, I want to feel alive. If in the future I feel as if I'm not in the best shape then I'll hand my contract back to whichever club I sign for."

The 2006 World Cup winner retains close ties with Scotland through his Scottish wife, Monica Romano, and says the decision is in her hands.

"I have to speak with my wife, she's the one who decides, but if I have a say my dream is to return to Rangers," Gattuso said.

"But the club are in a deep crisis, they're in controlled administration. I went there when I was unknown and they improved me. I'd like to go back there for a year."

The Italian made 34 appearances in Rangers colours, scoring three times.
