Manchester United chief executive David Gill has refused to be drawn on whether the club are making an attempt to sign Borussia Dortmund's Shinji Kagawa, but did state that players would only be brought in at Old Trafford who "add to and improve what is already a great squad".

Speaking at the Premier League's award ceremony to mark the 20th anniversary of the competition's format in its current incarnation, Gill explained that United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and his staff had been monitoring an unspecified number of targets throughout the season.

"We look at it (transfer targets) on a continual basis and with Alex and his coaching staff we are assessing who we want to bring in, and there will be hopefully some new additions. We will see what happens," Gill told Sky Sports News.

When asked specifically about Kagawa, who has a year to run on his current deal with the German champions but who is not renewing his deal, Gill replied: "We're not going to comment on individual players, it would be inappropriate. We try and do it privately and see what happens.

"As I say this process where we're looking at players happens throughout the year, it didn't start yesterday and we've been doing a lot of assessment."

Gill was also reluctant to give any hint as to how many new arrivals there could be.

"We don't want to do that (put a figure on the number of players). There are certain positions we're looking at and certain areas, we're not going to buy players just for the sake of buying players," he said.

"Clearly we have a great squad of players. We will only bring in players who add to and improve that. We've got some youngsters in there, we have a good mix of youth and experience, so additions have got to improve that."
