Robben forlorn after missing 'terrible' penalty

Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben was left to rue his extra-time penalty miss following the Champions League final loss to his former club Chelsea.

Robben had the opportunity to hand Bayern victory when Didier Drogba fouled Franck Ribery inside the area in extra-time. But Petr Cech saved the spot-kick before Chelsea went on to claim the win in a shootout, leaving Robben struggling to come to terms with his earlier miss.

"I can't describe how I feel with words, but it's been a terrible night," Robben said. "Two or three times you feel you have the cup in your hands [during the match] but at the end you stand with nothing.

"It wasn't a good penalty. I wanted to shoot the ball hard and high in the goal, but the ball didn't go high enough. It was a terrible penalty kick. After that, I still played well but you have to change your mindset at that point [of the penalty miss]."

Robben claims that Drogba and UEFA president Michel Platini attempted to lift his spirits after the penalty shootout, which ended 4-3 in Chelsea's favour.

"The fact that Drogba and Platini tried to cheer me up was nice, but it's worth nothing," Robben said. "I wanted that cup but it didn't happen."

Meanwhile, Thomas Muller, who opened the scoring for Bayern, believes the better side did not win the final. The Germany international was philosophical after the loss but felt disappointed by Bayern's inability to convert more goalscoring opportunities.

"That is football, we have seen it in the past. It is not always the better team that have the cup in the end," Muller told Sky Sports.

"When you score in front of your own fans so close to the end and then you watch Chelsea holding the cup, you can see that a lot has happened. It is hard to find words for that, but football is not everything."
