Stoke chairman Peter Coates has suggested the club could look to sign Michael Owen this summer.

Owen, 32, is available on a free transfer after Manchester United decided not to prolong his stay at Old Trafford, and the former England striker has said he would like to remain in the Premier League.

Stoke boss Tony Pulis had been keen on Owen when he left Newcastle United three years ago and Coates feels a deal may be possible.

"Tony is away at the moment, but that is one we could discuss when he gets back," Coates told The Sentinel. "He was interested in him previously.

"Michael Owen has been a fantastic player and I can see why Tony might be interested, but that will be very much a judgement for the management to make."

Owen had earlier indicated that he would welcome a move to newly-promoted Southampton on his Twitter account.

After Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier joked that the "south coast should be your next destination", Owen replied: "Open to offers!!!"
