Vitor Belfort has been ruled out of his headline fight against Wanderlei Silva at UFC 147 due to an injury picked up in training.

Belfort was due to face Silva in the first meeting between the pair since 1998, but that will not happen after the Brazilian broke a bone in his hand during training.

UFC president Dana White confirmed the news on Sunday.

"I wake up this morning, and Vitor Belfort breaks his hand, and he's in [expletive] surgery," White said. "It never ends for me. Every day we get up, and bad [expletive] happens.

"And guess what? I can guarantee you that when I wake up tomorrow, something else is going to happen."

White confirmed that Silva will remain on the card for the event, which takes place in Brazil on June 23, although a new opponent has not yet been announced.

The card also features a heavyweight fight between Fabricio Werdum and Mike Russow.
