England midfielder Frank Lampard will play no part at Euro 2012 after a thigh injury ruled him out of the tournament in Poland and Ukraine.

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson has been drafted into Roy Hodgson's 23-man squad as a replacement for the Chelsea man.

Lampard, who turns 34 next month, could well have played his last match in an England shirt - a blow that comes just weeks after the joy of lifting the Champions League trophy with the Blues.

Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson revealed that Lampard was ruled out of this summer's tournament after doctors could not be sure he would be fit enough to play any part in any of the group stage matches.

It is the second injury blow for the squad, after Gareth Barry was ruled out after straining a stomach muscle in last Saturday's friendly against Norway.

"It's a huge blow for the team, especially coming after the loss of another senior player in Gareth Barry," Hodgson said. "The fact that the doctor cannot guarantee Frank could take part in any of the group matches means we have to replace him in the central midfield area.

"Apart from it being a huge blow to me and the team, I'm especially disappointed for Frank himself. He has been in very good form and was looking forward to the tournament. He made a huge contribution towards us qualifying for the Euros so it is cruel to be forced out through injury just before the tournament."

Lampard picked up the thigh injury in training on Wednesday, with the FA immediately fearing the worst as Henderson - on Hodgson's standby list, but overlooked in favour of Phil Jagielka when Barry had to be replaced - was notified he could be about to be added to the squad.
