Arsenal have confirmed captain Cesc Fabregas will be absent for at least six weeks with a fracture to his right fibula.

The Spain international hauled Arsenal back into their Champions League tie with Barcelona when winning and subsequently scoring a penalty, but he limped away after firing in the equaliser.

Arsene Wenger wanted to take his captain off, but Fabragas stayed on the field for the final minutes on account of the Gunners having used all three of their substitutions.

Fabregas revealed after the game that he feared he had broken a bone and this was confirmed by an assessment on Thursday.

"Following a scan this afternoon, the club can confirm that Cesc Fabregas has suffered a small crack in his right fibula as a result of the collision with Barcelona defender Carles Puyol during Wednesday evening's match," read a statement on the club's official website.

"As a consequence, Cesc will miss the remainder of the domestic campaign as he will be out of action for at least six weeks. Everyone at the club wishes Cesc a full and speedy recovery."

The midfielder will miss out on Arsenal's push for domestic and European honours in the remaining weeks of the season and his participation at the World Cup finals is in doubt.
