Roy Hodgson has revealed Wayne Rooney is being considered as England's vice-captain at Euro 2012.

Head coach Hodgson named Steven Gerrard as England's skipper following his appointment as Fabio Capello's successor, after John Terry was relieved of the duty. During Capello's time in charge, Rio Ferdinand and Steven Gerrard were deputies to Terry, and Hodgson is considering a similar setup now he is at the helm.

Scott Parker and Joe Hart could be in the running for the role, while Hodgson confirmed Rooney is in his thoughts, despite the striker being suspended for the first two matches of the competition.

"The vice-captaincy is something we're considering," Hodgson said. "We're having to take it on a game-by-game basis but Rooney would come into the reckoning."

England host Belgium at Wembley on Saturday evening in their final warm-up match before Euro 2012 and Hodgson admits he will be paying particular attention to certain players.

"Audition is too strong a word to use with so many senior players, but it's preparatory," said Hodgson of the Belgium game. "The back four will be totally different and when it comes to the front four positions, I have a lot of options.

"I've not had a chance to see Danny Welbeck because he's not been fit, so there are elements like that involved."
