Gullit: Arsenal must make a statement to keep RvP

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit has warned Arsenal that the only way they can persuade Robin van Persie to stay at the club is by showing him their ambition to win major trophies.
Van Persie's future is currently the subject of much speculation, as clubs including Manchester City, Juventus and Barcelona show an interest in the forward - whose current deal at Emirates Stadium expires in 12 months' time.
The Gunners claimed earlier this week they have held positive talks with the 28-year-old about staying in north London but the player himself remains coy on his future, and compatriot Gullit believes only a statement of intent from Arsenal will convince him not to leave.
After sealing the signature of Lukas Podolski already this summer, Gullit believes they need to make a number of further high-profile additions to ensure the squad capable of contending for the Premier League and Champions League and convince Van Persie to remain.
"The question for Van Persie will be what Arsenal are going to do to make this a winning team," Gullit said. "The best players want to win trophies."
Van Persie is currently preparing for Euro 2012, a tournament the Dutch are among the favourites to win. Gullit is hopeful Van Persie and his team-mates will emulate the 1988 team - of which he was a part - who went on to win the tournament.
"I've had the joys of cup victory for both club and country," he said. "I know the difference. I'm very happy with what I achieved with Milan. It was the pinnacle of my career as a player.
"But to win it with your country is a bigger sensation. The whole country is upside down. It's not only the fans of Milan.
"1988 provided me with my greatest memories. Winning for your country is the best achievement ever because you live there. You will be a hero for the rest of your life."
