Poland coach says Lewandowski is set for Man Utd
Poland coach Franciszek Smuda has suggested that Poland and Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski is close to joining Manchester United.
Smuda, speaking ahead of his team's opening group game of Euro 2012, believes three of the key members of his squad who currently play for German champions Borussia Dortmund - Lewandowski, Lukasz Piszczek and Jakub Blaszczykowski - will all leave for new challenges in the near future.
In particular he expects Lewandowski - who was Dortmund's top scorer in their title-winning campaign - to leave in the near future, before seeming to confirm widespread recent reports that Manchester United are in negotiations for the striker.
"In my opinion, in a moment they will be gone from Borussia," Smuda said. "'Lewy' is going to Manchester United, Kuba [Blaszczykowski] also somewhere in England, Piszczek to Real Madrid.
"They have a goal and they want to grow. I base the squad on them."
Lewandowski might become United's second attacking signing of the summer, with reports on Friday suggesting the club has agreed a deal for rising Chilean star Angelo Henriquez.
The 23-year-old has so far refused recent attempts to extend his current deal with Dortmund, which expires in 2014. The club have already lost Shinji Kagawa to United, but have previously been adamant they will not lose any more of their star players this summer.
"We expect Kagawa to go, but no amount of money will persuade us to sell the others," managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke Watzke said.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson needs to strengthen his attacking options, with Dimitar Berbatov widely expected to depart the Premier League runners-up in the summer.
