Arsenal have issued a short statement in response to rumours circulating on the internet with regards to the reason behind Jack Wilshere's season-long absence.

The 20-year-old suffered a stress fracture in his ankle in pre-season for the 2011-12 campaign and as the problem persisted and prevented him from featuring for Arsene Wenger's side he underwent surgery in September of last year.

Since then Wilshere has suffered setbacks in his recovery which ruled him out for the entire season, and also deprived him the chance to travel to the European Championship with England.

In the meantime false rumours which spread from a Twitter account last week alleged that the midfielder had not played for the Gunners because he had failed a drugs test.

Arsenal were swift in their response to the bogus claims and a short statement from the club was quoted in the Sun, which also reported that the club had sought legal advice over the matter.

It said: "The rumoured reason on social networks behind Jack's absence this past season is entirely fabricated and false."
