Veteran defender Ryan Nelsen has confirmed he is to join Queens Park Rangers on a one-year contract.

Nelsen, 34, joined Tottenham Hotspur from Blackburn Rovers on a short-term deal in January and went on to make five Premier League appearances for the North London club.

Harry Redknapp announced his intention to offer the New Zealand international a new contract but, after the coach's departure from White Hart Lane was confirmed this week, Nelsen is set for pastures new.

The centre-back will be reunited with manager Mark Hughes at QPR, having been signed by the Welshman from DC United during his time in charge of Blackburn.

"I owe him pretty much everything. He gave me my chance [at Blackburn in 2005]," Nelsen told Fairfax. "That was a big factor. "I know Mark and his staff really well.

"They all really helped me when I was first over here in England, so it's nice to go full circle towards the end of my career. Hopefully, I can still help them out. They've got a lot of ambition - it seems like it's going to be a good fit."
