Tottenham goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes has indicated he is prepared to stay at the club and compete for the No. 1 spot now Harry Redknapp has left.

The Brazilian had fallen behind Brad Friedel in the pecking order under Redknapp, as he struggled to get a game at White Hart Lane.

The lack of playing time had led the 31-year-old to consider his future at the north London club, but Gomes is now willing to remain and try to impress the new boss.

"It was a very hard season, I was desperate to leave," Gomes told Arena Sportv. "Now things have changed, as the manager left last week."

Gomes is eager to fight his way back into the Brazil squad, and believes first-team football - whether that be at Spurs or elsewhere - is the only way to do so.

He added: "I want to return to the national team but I have to play first.

"Once I'm playing again, my focus will be on returning to the national team. I know how good it is to be there.

"Of course, they are rejuvenating the national team, but I'm only 31, which is a good age. I'll do very well this season."
