Hodgson hints at England revolution

England manager Roy Hodgson has pledged to give several emerging talents the chance to prove their worth in the friendly with Italy during August.

England were sent crashing out of Euro 2012 at the quarter-final stage by the same opponents on Sunday, having produced a performance notable for its wastefulness in possession, among other flaws.

The loss has led to a period of soul searching in English football as pundits plot the course to take ahead of World Cup 2014, with the consensus being that the national team needs to keep the ball better in order to challenge at major tournaments.

Hodgson was denied the chance to pick the likes of Jack Wilshere and Tom Cleverley - two players who do seem comfortable in possession - at Euro 2012 due to injury, and it seems their chance will come in the Italy rematch, which will take place in Bern because Wembley is unavailable.

"You will definitely see some revolution there because that game is going to be the ideal opportunity for me to look at some players who weren't with us here and maybe feel they should have been," he said. "I want to see if they can add to the quality of our team."
