Sturridge treated for suspected meningitis

Daniel Sturridge's participation in the London 2012 Games is in doubt just 24 hours after he was named in Stuart Pearce's Team GB squad.

Sturridge is reportedly undergoing treatment for suspected meningitis and was admitted to St Mary's hospital in Paddington for tests over the weekend.

The striker fell out of favour at Chelsea under Roberto Di Matteo which cost him any hope of being part of England's squad for Euro 2012. He was handed the consolation of a place in the 18-man party for London 2012 but could miss out on that too.

Doctors reportedly suspect Sturridge may be suffering from the viral strain of meningitis, which is less serious and does not need extensive medical treatment. Team GB's first match is against Senegal in just over three weeks, at Old Trafford on July 26.

Pearce would be able to call in any of the 35 players named at the previous squad submission point, though two names on the immediate standby squad are Crystal Palace's Wilfried Zaha and Huddersfield Town's prolific striker Jordan Rhodes.

Under Olympic tournament rules, Pearce can pick from the 35-man squad until July 25, the day before their first game, then after this point only players from the four-man standby list. This also includes Reading goalkeeper Alex McCarthy and Norwich City defender Ryan Bennett.

Di Matteo is due to give his first pre-season press conference on Wednesday which should shed more light on Sturridge's condition.
