Linfield spot on to keep European dream alive
Linfield were made to engage in a nervy penalty shootout in order to overcome B36 Torshavn, winning 4-3 on spot-kicks for a place in the next round of Champions League qualifying.
Tuesday's second leg at the Gundadalur Stadium commenced with the sides locked at 0-0. Linfield had missed a penalty in the first encounter, but it was from 12 yards that they eventually clinched victory in the return.
After a goalless 120 minutes, Kaemint Matras hit the bar with Torshavn's first penalty. Linfield scored their first four, before goalkeeper Ross Glendinning saved the home side's fifth to seal the win.
Linfield now face AEL Limassol of Cyprus in the next qualifying round. David Jeffrey's men will be away in the first leg on Tuesday, July 17.
Also on Tuesday, Portadown took a step closer to the Europa League with a 2-1 aggregate win over Shkendija Tetovo at Shamrock Park. Richard Lecky and Ross Redman scored the second-half goals.
