Liverpool European Cup winner Dietmar Hamann has voiced his concern over the future of Andy Carroll at Anfield, insisting the forward was "out of his depth" last season.

Hamann spent seven years at Liverpool, making close to 200 league appearances for the club. The pinnacle of his spell came in 2005 when his arrival as a half-time substitute in the Champions League final sparked a Liverpool revival against AC Milan.

The German won eight major trophies during his time on Merseyside and, as a former player of Newcastle, he is well placed to offer opinion on £35 million man Carroll. Reds boss Brendan Rodgers appears willing to release the striker, with AC Milan and West Ham both interested.

Carroll endured several tough months during his first full season, only truly turning heads towards the end of the campaign when his late cameo almost saved Liverpool in the FA Cup final. Hamann believes it would be unrealistic to suddenly think Liverpool will have a force on their hands next season.

"I don't know what gave the impression that Carroll will have a big impact next season, he was badly out of his depth as many others," Hamann tweeted on Wednesday.

Asked what Liverpool need to do to become genuine contenders in the Premier League once again, Hamann placed all emphasis on adding quality to an attack that scored just 47 goals in 38 games last season.

"They need to get in the top four first," Hamann said. "Going forward they need two or three players, a forward and two wingers. Hopefully [Stewart] Downing comes good."
