Midfielder Alberto Aquilani will stay at Liverpool for the coming season, his agent has said.

Aquilani, 28, has been linked with a move away from Anfield - spending last season on loan at AC Milan - but the Serie A club declined to take up their option to buy him.

The Italian has two years remaining on his Liverpool contract, and agent Franco Zavaglia told calcionews24.com: "Aquilani will remain at Liverpool. He has a contract, hence there is nothing new.

"I would say that at this point the chances that he could go back to Milan are impossible. Other clubs? I reiterate, he will remain at Liverpool.''

Aquilani has played only 28 games for Liverpool since being signed by Rafa Benitez from Roma in a £20 million deal in 2009.

Benitez's successors, Roy Hodgson and Kenny Dalglish, both allowed Aquilani to go on season-long loans to Serie A clubs - he spent the season with Juventus in 2010-11 - but current manager Brendan Rodgers has reportedly said he is keen to work with him.

Earlier this summer, Zavaglia said Aquilani had fully overcome the injury problems that plagued his debut season at Anfield.

"Recently, apart from a slight ankle sprain, Aquilani has had no major fitness problems," he explained. "The real problems were when he had ankle surgery at Liverpool."
