A "recharged" Steven Gerrard is embracing the new regime under Brendan Rodgers, with the Liverpool captain insisting that with hard work the club can "get back to the highs".

Gerrard has joined up with his team-mates on their pre-season tour of America, following a four-week break after England's disappointing Euro 2012 campaign came to an end with a quarter-final defeat to Italy.

Gerrard returns to Liverpool with the club beginning life with Rodgers at the helm. Although the Reds won the Carling Cup and reached the FA Cup final last season, an eighth-placed finish in the Premier League was deemed unsatisfactory by the club's hierarchy and Rodgers was drafted in to replace the outgoing Kenny Dalglish.

"There have been times in my career at Liverpool when it hasn't been great and it hasn't been rosy," Gerrard said. "I think the message is keep working hard and things turn around. That's what big clubs do and big organisations do, they keep working hard. Sport's not just about highs it's about lows as well and sometimes the lows help you to get back to the highs."

Liverpool play Roma at Fenway Park on Wednesday, before a Europa League qualifying round tie against either FK Renova from Macedonia or FC Gomel of Belarus next Thursday.

"I think we've got a few important games before August 18 [when they play West Brom in their first Premier League fixture of the new campaign], for me it's just important to get my legs going again and try and keep fit in the couple of friendlies we've got," Gerrard added. "We're off in the Europa League next week and I'm really looking forward to that; hopefully I'll play some part."

Despite still feeling the pain of England's unsuccessful tilt at Euros glory, Gerrard says he feels refreshed and ready to excel in Rodgers' new reign.

"We've had four weeks' rest since the Euros, I enjoyed the Euros and the experience personally, although very frustrated to go out in the last eight again. When you're a footballer and you have a bit of a rest you recharge your batteries and you look forward to getting going again, and I'm really looking forward to getting going under the new setup."
