- Pre-season friendly
Newcastle held by 10-man Olympiakos
Newcastle failed to make the most of their numerical advantage as they were held 1-1 by 10-man Olympiakos during a pre-season friendly in Portugal.
Newcastle took the lead through Steven Taylor, but despite seeing Francois Modesto dismissed for a second bookable offence, the Greek champions equalised through Kostas Mitroglou in Faro.
Even a penalty shoot-out couldn't separate the sides - Tim Krul saved from Andras Tatos but Papiss Cisse blazed over the bar as it finished 4-4 on spot-kicks.
The result means both teams take five points from the game - one for a draw and one for each successful penalty. Newcastle have five points, while Olympiakos, who also drew 4-4 on penalties against Braga on Thursday, now have ten.
Meanwhile, Newcastle's North East rivals Sunderland were beaten 1-0 by Hartlepool. The Black Cats dominated the second half, but were unable to recover from an early goal by Steve Howard at Victoria Park.
Titus Bramble failed to clear his lines when the ball was chipped over the defence and the former Derby County striker snuck in to lash a shot low past Simon Mignolet after just eight minutes. Sunderland had copious chances to level but were denied by the heroics of keeper Scott Flinders.
