Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed the club are still trying to agree a new contract with forward Theo Walcott.

Walcott's current terms expire next summer and discussions have been ongoing during pre-season, with the Gunners keen to extend his stay at Emirates Stadium.

Having seen Robin van Persie, who was in the same contract situation as Walcott, leave for Manchester United this week, Wenger is wary of also losing Walcott.

"We are still trying to extend his [Walcott's] deal," the Frenchman is quoted as saying by the Sun. "When a player doesn't want to stay, you either force him or you let him go."

Conjecture also surrounds the future of midfielder Alex Song, who is reportedly close to joining Barcelona for around £15 million.
