Mancini faces anxious Aguero wait

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini will have to wait two days to discover the extent of the injury suffered by striker Sergio Aguero in the 3-2 win over Southampton on Sunday.

Aguero was stretchered off in the first half after going down clutching his knee following a tackle from Nathaniel Clyne. When asked about the seriousness of Aguero's knock, Mancini said: "I think we need to wait two days for a scan.

"I am worried about Sergio because anything around the knee is dangerous and this injury was so strange. We will have to wait, but we are not sure exactly what the problem is at this point."

Meanwhile, Aguero tweeted: "The studies I had done revealed there's no significant injury but it was a very tough hit to my knee. Tomorrow, the physicians will evaluate the time it will take for me to recover."

City, who took the lead through Carlos Tevez, fell behind in the second half when Rickie Lambert and Steven Davis netted for the Saints. But the Premier League champions showed their resilience - in a manner similar to their dramatic title-winning victory over QPR at the end of last season - as Edin Dzeko and Samir Nasri turned the game around.

Although relieved to have collected three points, Mancini conceded there were obvious flaws that will need to be ironed out in the coming weeks.

"It was important we won this game, because the first game when you start the season is always difficult," Mancini said. "It's important to have character, but it's better next time [that] we close the game earlier. We had many chances to close the game, and we didn't. When you don't close the game, you are taking risks.

"I think today [we struggled] only because it was the first game, and we worked together only for two weeks. We need to improve our situation now."
