Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck has signed a new four-year contract with the Old Trafford club, which commits him to the Premier League outfit until at least 2016.

The 21-year-old, a product of United's youth academy, made his debut for the club in late 2008 and enjoyed his breakthrough season at Old Trafford last year when he scored nine goals in 30 league appearances.

Welbeck then travelled to Euro 2012 with England and scored the winner in his country's 3-2 Group D victory over Sweden.

"Playing for United is all I've ever wanted to do - it's the club I've supported all my life," Welbeck told United's official website. "I can't wait for the challenge of the new season to play my part in helping the team compete for trophies.

"I'm learning all the time from the best manager in the game and I'm keen for that to continue alongside the world class players in the squad."

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was equally as delighted to have tied up the talented striker's services on a long-term deal.

"Danny has been with the club since he was eight years old and has made fantastic progress in the last couple of years - first out on loan and last year as a regular in the first team," said the Scot.

"He has become an important player at international level as well, as the maturity of his performances at the European Championships showed. This year is another important one for him. He has a bright future ahead of him."
