Former Manchester United striker Michael Owen insists that he is close to signing for a new club and just has to decide between his many offers.

Once seen as the future of English football, Owen was released by United at the end of last season after three years at Old Trafford.

Now the 32-year-old, who has been linked with Stoke, Fulham and Everton, is targeting a return to the Premier League once he makes up his mind where his future lies.

"As with a lot of these situations, transfer windows and things like that, a lot of things happen later on in the window when people are refreshing their squads and things like that," Owen told Five Live's Sportsweek programme.

"So, yes, I have been in contact with quite a few teams and I definitely expect to be donning a new shirt quite soon.''

He added: "I've spoken to quite a few teams and it's a case of picking the best which is going to suit me and my family. I've said before I'd prefer that to be in the Premier League and that remains the case.

"Different things will form the basis of making the right choice: location - it would be great if I could stay at home but if not then so be it. The quality of the team, the manager - everything really so hopefully I shall pick the right one.''

Owen added that he would not get further involved in horse racing when his playing career ends but instead would like to stay in football.

"Horse racing is something I am passionate about and enjoy but is certainly something I want to keep as enjoyment, even though I have got a business interest in it I don't want to go any further," he said.

"Football is what I know and what I do best and I will certainly stay in the football world. I have done my first few coaching badges but I am still not sure whether I want to pursue that or not. There are other things you can do in football and I wouldn't mind exploring them.''
