Rodgers: Liverpool will replace Carroll
Brendan Rodgers has confirmed Andy Carroll will be replaced at Anfield after the striker sealed a loan move to West Ham on Thursday.
Rodgers witnessed his side draw 1-1 with Hearts in the Europa League qualifying play-off, completing a 2-1 aggregate victory. Luis Suarez scored the decisive goal of the tie after Pepe Reina's mistake had allowed Hearts back on terms.
While the match was in progress, Carroll was completing his medical at West Ham ahead of a season-long loan switch. The agreement sees the Hammers pay Liverpool an undisclosed fee up front, with a view to a permanent move.
"That was the understanding, that Andy would go and get some games," Rodgers told ESPN. "He obviously wasn't going to play regularly here but he'll go to West Ham and get some games.
"Hopefully that will enable us to complete our aims of bringing in a player tomorrow. I'll speak to our managing director Ian Ayre, who has done brilliant over the summer."
Asked if Rodgers hoped to bring in more than one player on Friday, the Liverpool boss replied: "If it's possible. We've got a number of targets but it's not always our choice.
"We certainly need help with one or two numbers, I hope we can do that tomorrow."
