Brendan Rodgers refused to rule out bringing Michael Owen back to Liverpool after the Reds' winless start to the season continued with defeat to Arsenal.

Owen, who started his career at Anfield before an £8 million move to Real Madrid in 2004, is currently without a club after being released by Manchester United at the end of the season.

Rodgers, who revealed he would not have allowed Andy Carroll to leave on loan if he had known they would not sign a replacement, admitted his strikeforce needed reinforcement.

Lone striker Luis Suarez cut a forlorn figure up front as goals from Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla saw the Gunners claim their first win of the season, leaving Liverpool with a single point from their opening three matches.

As a free agent, Owen provides Rodgers with an opportunity to bolster Liverpool's forward line before the transfer window reopens in January, and he hinted the 32-year-old's experience would be a worthy addition to the squad.

"Andy is gone. That's the reality of it," Rodgers said. "We all know we need reinforcements but the window is shut so we can't do anything about it. We have got what we have got.

"Any player that I believe can improve the squad I will look at. We have got a very, very small squad with some very young players in it. So I can't say no."
