Rodgers wins battle to keep Sterling out of U-21s

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has warned against the dangers of fast-tracking Raheem Sterling through the international levels.

Sterling will make his first appearance for England Under-19s against Germany on Thursday, his reward for impressive performances against Manchester City and Arsenal in the Premier League this season, having been handed a starting berth by Rodgers.

His impact at Anfield this season has seen him described as a potential future England international, but Rodgers is adamant that he is not yet ready for Under-21 football, let alone the senior team.

"It is all about individual needs," Rodgers said. "It might look great on the back pages that he is involved in the Under-21s, but the reality is that this is a kid who has made great strides over the last few weeks. You have seen his quality, courage and attitude in games - it has been fantastic. But for the moment, let's just stay calm.

"I think with young players, you have to be careful. They can be elevated above their station too quickly. That is a part of it in this country. They have one good game and they get elevated into superstar status. But you see them at 23 and 24 and you wonder why they are not superstars anymore."
