Miroslav Klose has claimed he turned down an opportunity to join Tottenham Hotspur this summer, choosing instead to honour his contract with Serie A side Lazio.

Klose - now just four goals behind Gerd Müller's Germany record of 68 - suggested Spurs had approached him during the most recent transfer window.

"Tottenham came looking for me but I signed for Lazio until 2014 and I intend to respect that contract," he told Sportal.it.

The striker, 34, also took time to praise his club's new coach Vladimir Petkovic, adding: "He is one of the greats. The Scudetto will be difficult but I can't yet say how far we will go. Now we must focus on Chievo then there will be the Europa League fixtures."

Klose went on to play down fears he had returned from international duty injured and, although his hand will require a protective cast, he said he was otherwise fully fit.

He said: "It's all fine, I just got a couple of nasty knocks, but I am not worried by the ankle or my hand."
