Free agent Emile Heskey is on the verge of signing for Australian A-League side Newcastle Jets.

Heskey, 34, has been looking for a new club since leaving Aston Villa at the end of last season and has been linked with moves to Hull, Stoke, Norwich, Espanyol and Liverpool.

Newcastle Jets had Francis Jeffers on their books until earlier this year before he was released.

It is understood that Jets CEO Robbie Middleby and Troy Palmer, CEO of the Hunter Sports Group that owns the club, have held talks with Heskey and a one-year deal has been put on the table.

The Jets declined to comment, citing the club's policy of "not speculating about player movement through the media".

Football Federation Australia would have to sanction any marquee arrival but FFA sources have confirmed this would be a formality.

If the deal goes through and Heskey passes a medical then he will join up with the squad in time for the start of the A-League season in October, with the Jets' second game pitting Heskey against Alessandro Del Piero's Sydney FC.
