Arsenal assistant manager Steve Bould hailed new Gunners hero Lukas Podolski one of the most clinical finisher he has ever set eyes on after a goal from Germany striker helped the Gunners to an opening Champions League win against Montpellier on Tuesday night.

Bould enjoyed a winning first night as the first-in-command on the Arsenal touchline, as he stepped in for banned boss Arsene Wenger and oversaw a 2-1 away win.

A no-nonsense performer as a player, Bould seems to be similarly forthright when a microphone is placed before him and it was his praise of Podolski that was especially gushing.

"I have not seen many finishers as good as Podolski thoughout my career," Bould told reporters, as he filled in for Wenger in the Montpellier media room. "He has made a huge impact on every at Arsenal, both on match days and in the build-up to games.

"In training, right foot or left foot, his shots fly in at 100mph. He has really added something this year and while I'm not getting involved in whether we are missing Robin (Van Persie), it is clear that we have signed a great player in Podolski."

While one of Wenger's new strikers is in sparkling form, summer buy Olivier Giroud is still searching for his first Arsenal goal and yet Bould is eager to play down the Frenchman's scoring woes and insists he is contributing so much more to the team despite his failure to register a debut strike.

"Olivier is doing a really good team job for the team and I'm sure the goals will come for him," he says. "As someone who appreciates the needs for the whole team to contribute to defending against set-plays, I have to say he is fabulous. He is a really hard-working boy."

Bould revealed he had 'headache and half' after his touchline baptism of fire in the Champions League, as he admitted he felt the heat a little more than he was used to in his previous posting.

"It's a different pressure than I've been used to taking the Arsenal under-18s, but we got a great result and that's all important," he added.
