Chelsea have confirmed that defender David Luiz has signed a new five-year contract with the Premier League club.

Luiz, 25, joined Chelsea from Benfica in January 2011 for £21 million and has since started 55 games for the Blues.

The Brazil international lifted the Champions League trophy with Chelsea last season, having been named in the starting XI for the final against Bayern Munich.

Luiz, whose side also won the FA Cup last season, played the full 120 minutes of his team's famous match at the Allianz Arena, before scoring from the spot during their penalty shoot-out win.

The defender, who had this summer been linked with Barcelona, told Chelsea's official website: "I am very happy to sign a new contract with Chelsea.

"It is a great club and I look forward to winning more trophies here. I want to play for a long time at the top level - which is what playing for Chelsea means. I love everything about the club and especially the fans, who have made me very welcome and given me great support."
