Patrice Evra has warned his Manchester United team-mates their Premier League title chances could already be slipping away from them if they do not rediscover their winning mentality.

United suffered their second defeat of the season on Saturday as Tottenham enjoyed a first win at Old Trafford in 23 years, leaving Sir Alex Ferguson's side four points behind leaders Chelsea.

They now head to Romania to face FC Cluj in the Champions League on Tuesday before a visit to Newcastle on Sunday, and Evra admits United have not been good enough, but refused to make excuses for his side.

"We put on the Man United face only in the second half against Spurs and this is not enough if we're to win the title," Evra said. "We must make sure in the Champions League and away at Newcastle we are back to the winning mentality we showed in the second half.

"That's why I say the problem was inside our heads. It was not tactics, it was not tiredness. You don't play a second half like that then make an excuse that you are tired. It's just about your head, we didn't start well in that game.

"Two defeats is too much if you want to win the title. But we must try to be positive as well. We must forget that first half against Spurs. I hope it was just an accident. We were not good enough in the first half and that is what is painful."
