Roy Hodgson has named Celtic keeper Fraser Forster in his squad for next week's World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Poland - but there is no place for Rio Ferdinand.

This is a first England call-up for Celtic goalkeeper Forster, who has impressed for the Bhoys this term.

Stoke City defender Ryan Shawcross has also been included for the first time since the match against Egypt at Wembley in March 2010, while Tottenham Hotspur winger Aaron Lennon has been recalled for the first time since the World Cup of 2010.

There are places in the squad for Manchester City midfielder James Milner and Arsenal forward Theo Walcott despite the pair being on the periphery for their clubs this term.

Hodgson reportedly told passengers on a train that Manchester United defender Ferdinand's time as an England player was over and he remains in the international wilderness.

There are places in the squad for Wayne Rooney and Andy Carroll who only recently returned from injury.

England opened their qualifying campaign with a 5-0 win in Moldova, which was followed by a 1-1 draw with Ukraine - a game in which captain Steven Gerrard was sent off.
