Rodgers to find role for Carragher

Brendan Rodgers has vowed to find a way to keep long-serving defender Jamie Carragher at Liverpool beyond retirement.

Carragher, 34, has been used sparingly in the Premier League this season, and is out of contract next summer.

Rodgers has instead preferred to use Carragher as a wise head to guide his young players in cup competitions, with the former England international captaining inexperienced sides in the Europa League and Capital One Cup.

The former England international has yet to take a decision on his future, and his manager has refused to rule out offering him another playing contract.

But Rodgers believes Carragher, who has spent his entire playing career at Anfield, has plenty more to offer the club, whatever he decides to do.

"Whatever route Jamie wants to take, I'm sure the club will support him, as I will," Rodgers told the Daily Star Sunday. "He still has a lot to offer in the next few years.

"But when that time comes, as it does for every great player, he will have to sit down and decide what he wants to do. Coaching, scouting, recruitment? Whatever it is, there's a wonderful role here for a player like that because he's an iconic figure for Liverpool.

"He's been first class since I came. He and Steven Gerrard have been phenomenal. You can go into a club and it may be difficult sometimes.

"But these guys pledged their 150 per cent commitment from day one to what I want to do and they have never wavered from that. Jamie has been a real breath of fresh air."
