Southampton's record signing Gaston Ramirez has been ruled out for up to six weeks after suffering a thigh injury.

Ramirez, 21, suffered a dead leg in training before his thigh muscle later swelled up, rendering him hospitalised.

The Uruguay international will miss his country's upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Argentina and Bolivia, while he is likely to be out of Saints' next four matches, with manager Nigel Adkins not wanting to take any chances.

"The muscle swelled up very much because there was nowhere for the blood to go, so there was a lot of pressure on his thigh," Adkins said.

"He has had to have a couple of days in hospital to try and relieve the pressure, so obviously he is not going to go and join the Uruguayan team over the international break."

Ramirez signed for the club from Bologna in the summer for a fee of £12 million and has made three appearances, scoring one goal.
