Steven Gerrard believes the St George's Park complex will set the England team on the path towards ending their long wait for a major trophy.

The £105million facility near Burton was officially opened on Tuesday, and the hope is it will transform the way football is played in the country by youngsters, and raise standards of coaching.

Gerrard and his England team-mates have now sampled the site, ahead of World Cup qualifiers with San Marino and Poland this week and next. And the England captain could not have been more impressed by what he saw.

"The place has blown me away. All the lads are buzzing to be here. We're lucky to have facilities like this. It's a long-term plan and hopefully it can bring success to the national teams," he said.

"Now we've got the best stadium in the world and the best facilities. We're taking away all the excuses the players might use in the future."
