Thomas Hitzlsperger is showing a "fantastic" attitude in his bid to win a contract at Everton, according to coach Alan Stubbs.

The German midfielder, who is on trial at Goodison Park, featured as an overage player for Stubbs' Under-21 side as they won 2-0 at Norwich on Monday night.

It was Hitzlsperger's first competitive action since March, after a struggle with injuries last season, which ended with him being released by Bundesliga club Wolfsburg.

"He probably played longer than we expected him to, but because of injuries we ended up using all of our subs," Stubbs told Everton's website. "I'm really pleased for Thomas because his attitude has been fantastic."

Everton manager David Moyes offered a trial last month to the 30-year-old, who is eligible to sign outside the transfer window because he is a free agent.

Moyes has since made it clear he will take his time before deciding whether to offer a contract, stating that Hitzlsperger needs to build up his fitness first.

But the former Aston Villa and West Ham man managed a full 90 minutes at Carrow Road, and is doing all the right things to make a good impression, according to Stubbs.

"I thought Thomas did well and you could see that he's experienced and has a calmness about him when he has the ball," he said. "It was his first game coming back, so it would have been a great boost to him coming through without a problem."
