Liverpool face an anxious wait to discover how long Fabio Borini will be sidelined for after the striker suffered a broken bone in his foot while on international duty.

Borini picked up the injury to his right foot while training with the Italian Under-21 side, a setback that immediately ruled him out of the Azzurini's forthcoming two matches against Sweden.

The Italian Football Federation confirmed the injury on its website, after the former Roma and Swansea striker was sent for an MRI on Thursday.

After loaning Andy Carroll to West Ham for the season in controversial circumstances, Liverpool will be able to call on just one recognised senior striker - Luis Suarez - for the period Borini is unavailable for selection.

The Italian moved to Anfield for £11 million during the summer, scoring one goal in 11 appearances for the first team to date.
