Welbeck hails Rooney understanding

Danny Welbeck believes his strike partnership with Wayne Rooney can flourish for both club and country.

The Manchester United forwards both scored twice as England beat San Marino 5-0 on Friday and Welbeck is enjoying teaming up with the Liverpudlian.

"I'm used to playing with Wazza up front at United and am really relishing the chance to play with him for England," the 21-year-old said.

"Once we get into positions in and around the box, we know different styles of combinations to play."

Welbeck's brace on Friday took his tally to four goals in 12 games for England and he hopes he can retain his place for Tuesday's game in Warsaw.

Jermain Defoe, who is a booking away from a ban, was rested for the San Marino game but could return if manager Roy Hodgson changes his strike force.

"Now we're all really looking forward to the Poland game," Welbeck added. "It's going to be difficult but once we get on the pitch, we're going to show our stuff and show everybody what we can do.

"We are top of the group now. That's where we want to be, that's the main aim, and that's where we want to finish as well."

Rooney captained England for the second time against San Marino and Welbeck was impressed with the way his Old Trafford team-mate led his country.

He said: "As a captain, he's good. He's always talking to you, letting you know what you're doing right, what you're doing wrong.

"He's like that when he's not got the armband as well so it makes no difference really."
