Steven Gerrard has many special memories at Anfield

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has welcomed the news that the club will redevelop Anfield rather than build a new stadium.

Reds managing director Ian Ayre confirmed on Monday that the club had abandoned plans to build a new stadium at Stanley Park.

The scheme will take place in conjunction with Liverpool City Council's £25 million Anfield Village regeneration project, with the council planning to demolish a number of homes in the area to make space for the expansion.

And Gerrard, who has made nearly 600 appearances for Liverpool since his debut in 1998, believes Anfield has too much history for the club to walk away.

Speaking ahead of England's World Cup qualifier against Poland on Tuesday, Gerrard said: "I'm really pleased. I've had some special occasions at Anfield and so have the club.

"If they are going to spend all that money on Anfield and improve it then fantastic. I'm very happy at that news. It is major news for the club. It has been on everyone's lips for a number of years now, would we move away from Anfield or reinvent Anfield?

"I've been like everyone, waiting for the verdict on that, and it looks like it is going to be Anfield which is great. A lot of history and important things have happened at Anfield and I think it is fantastic Liverpool are staying there.''
