Newcastle United are believed to be closely monitoring PSV Eindhoven goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet, after sending a delegation to see the player in action.

Zoet, 21, was watched by chief scout Graham Carr and goalkeeping coach Andy Woodman as he kept a clean sheet for Netherlands Under-21s during their 2-0 victory over Slovakia Under-21s on Monday.

The former SC Veendam man is currently on loan at RKC Waalwijk from PSV, and could be bought for a relatively small fee to provide cover for compatriot Tim Krul - who the club picked up for €220,000 from Ado Den Haag in 2005.

In the absence of Krul, 24, and Rob Elliot through injury, veteran Steve Harper has been deputising.

The Magpies are also keen to add a young reserve goalkeeper to their ranks after releasing Ole Soderberg in the summer.
