Rio: Football is under the microscope

Rio Ferdinand has warned the Football Association that the sport is "under the microscope" after the governing body investigates alleged comments made by referee Mark Clattenburg.

Ferdinand wore a 'Kick It Out' T-shirt before the tense encounter between Chelsea and Manchester United at Stamford Bridge, from which United emerged victorious after the Blues had two players sent off.

Chelsea reported Clattenburg after the game, alleging the official used "inappropriate language" towards two of their players, John Obi Mikel and Juan Mata.

Chelsea's complaint is that Mikel was the victim of a racist comment, while Spain midfielder Mata was allegedly called a "Spanish t**t" by Clattenburg, who has been stood down from officiating duties this weekend.

"[It] will be interesting to see how this alleged 'race' or 'insulting' language episode pans out, our game is under the microscope like never before," Ferdinand said on Twitter.

With the dust barely settled from Sunday's controversial encounter, United return to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday for their Capital One Cup clash against Chelsea.
