Kris Commons was in inspirational form as Celtic trounced St Johnstone 5-0 in their Scottish League Cup quarter-final clash at Parkhead.

The Hoops midfielder began the demolition when his shot was deflected into his own net by Perth midfielder Liam Craig in the 28th minute and four minutes later Commons grabbed number two with another drive before setting up Gary Hooper for number three before the break.

The Scotland international scored from the spot 10 minutes into the second half to begin an argument of whether or not that was his hat-trick before substitute Charlie Mulgrew, on at the interval for Hooper, completed a night of misery for the hapless McDiarmid Park men when he made it 5-0.

St Mirren needed extra time and penalties but eventually they booked their place in the semi-finals after a 4-2 spot-kick win against Aberdeen.

Stephen Hughes crashed his spot kick off the bar and substitute Cammy Smith saw his effort saved by Craig Samson as the Dons crashed out.

Twice the Buddies had led through goals from Sam Parkin and Kenny McLean, but first Scott Vernon and then, in injury time, Josh Magennis, levelled matters.
