Ferguson: Scoreline flattered Arsenal

Sir Alex Ferguson accused Manchester United of being too casual after they scraped past Arsenal 2-1 at Old Trafford.

United thrashed the Gunners 8-2 in the corresponding fixture last season but, after Robin van Persie's early strike against his former club on Saturday, the hosts squandered a plethora of chances as they struggled to kill the game off.

Santi Cazorla's last-gasp strike proved to be mere consolation for Arsenal, who had Jack Wilshere sent off moments after Patrice Evra had doubled United's lead.

Wayne Rooney missed a penalty on the stroke of half-time and Ferguson believes the scoreline flattered Arsenal, claiming the game lacked its usual spark.

"You look at that scoreline, 2-1, you think it's a close game but it wasn't a close game," Ferguson told Sky Sports. "Chances were missed; we should have put it to bed a long long time ago.

"There was a lack of urgency in our game throughout, far too casual. It was an unusual Manchester United v Arsenal game really. I know there were a lot of bookings but it didn't really get anywhere near the Manchester United v Arsenal games in the past."
