Luis Suarez was once again the centre of attention as Liverpool came from behind to claim a 1-1 draw against 10-man Newcastle on Sunday - in a game they were unlucky not to win in the closing stages.

Yohan Cabaye gave Alan Pardew's side the lead at Anfield on the stroke of half-time with a beautifully-struck volley, as Newcastle started the game brightly. An outstanding piece of individual skill from Suarez then levelled matters with just over 20 minutes remaining - before Fabricio Coloccini was dismissed for a horrible attempted challenge on the Uruguayan that set up a tense finale.

Handed the numerical advantage Liverpool had a number of great chances to win the match - but Suarez, Raheem Sterling and substitute Jonjo Shelvey were all unable to beat Tim Krul with decent opportunities as the points were shared.

Ahead of kick-off there was a celebratory mood on Merseyside, as Steven Gerrard was presented with an award for reaching 600 appearances for the club. But events on the pitch did not go quite according to plan, as speculative attempts from the home side failed to truly threaten Krul.

Newcastle then took the lead as both managers were preparing their team talks, Cabaye taking advantage of some lax defending in the penalty area to turn and fire a volley from an acute angle that a partially unsighted Brad Jones was unable to deal with.

Liverpool grew into the ascendancy when the teams returned for the second half, but an equalising goal failed to materialise until the 67th minute. A deep ball from Jose Enrique found Suarez, who took the ball down on his shoulder under the close attentions of Coloccini and prodded it around the onrushing Krul before turning home to restore parity.

From that point it was an end-to-end encounter, until Newcastle were forced to scale back their ambitions with ten minutes remaining after Coloccini was deservedly given his marching orders for an ugly, late challenge on Suarez - who had infuriated the Argentine all day with his trickery.

Liverpool rushed forward in hopes of finding a winner, but one would not be forthcoming as a draw left Newcastle far the happier side.

In the day's early kick-off, Reading and QPR shared the points in an entertaining 1-1 draw that did little to help either side's early season troubles.

Both enmeshed in the bottom three of the table, it was Reading who took the lead early in the first half at Loftus Road - Kaspars Gorkss volleying home against his former club after Ryan Nelsen's improvised header had ricocheted away off the crossbar.

QPR enjoyed the majority of the chances in a contest that was notable for its open nature, but it took until midway through the second half for Mark Hughes' side to grab a much-needed equaliser, Djibril Cisse showing some belated quality to turn home Jose Bosingwa's pinpoint cross.

The Frenchman was one of a number of players to have chances to win the match late on - Adel Taarabt also seeing a great chance turned wide by Alex McCarthy - but in the end the match finished 1-1, leaving both sides with work to do to escape from the relegation zone.
