Aston Villa will assess the fitness of Darren Bent on Monday after he suffered an ankle injury in training - a repeat of the injury which sidelined him for the final three months of last season.

Bent, 28, picked up his latest setback on Friday and was therefore ruled out of Villa's 1-0 win at his former club Sunderland on Saturday.

The injury comes at a frustrating time for the England international who has been replaced in Paul Lambert's starting line-up by Christian Benteke in recent weeks.

While the ankle problem was serious last season, causing Bent to miss out on Euro 2012, Lambert is unsure as to how long it could keep his striker out this time around.

"Darren hurt his ankle on Friday in training," he said.

"It is the same ankle he hurt against Wigan (in February). I know it was serious then. Is it serious? I don't know yet. He will get treatment on it during the week and we will see.

"He was really hobbling on Friday and we couldn't take a chance on him with Sunderland.''
