Holtby open to Liverpool move

Schalke midfielder Lewis Holtby has admitted that he would welcome a move to Liverpool as he enters the final year of his contract.

The Germany Under-21 captain joked that family loyalties would not stop him from joining the Reds, who have been linked with the 22-year-old since negotiations on a new deal began with his club.

"I have always said that one day I would play in England," Holtby said. "I wouldn't even rule out Liverpool, even if it would be tough for my dad - he's an Everton fan."

Schalke general manager Horst Heldt having indicated that solid progress had been made during negotiations, but as yet no agreement has been reached.

German football magazine Kicker has reported that it is an "open secret" that both Arsenal and Liverpool have shown particular interest in the Germany Under-21 captain, while Heldt recently told Bild: "I know there are concrete offers and clubs are interested."

And while Holtby has indicated that he would welcome a move to Anfield , the midfielder recently stated his longstanding affection for Arsenal's style of play and excelled during the recent Champions League victory at the Emirates

The German has suffered a slight dip in form since, and was not at his best at the weekend as Schalke succumbed to a 3-2 defeat at Hoffenheim.
