Paul Scholes and Darren Fletcher have not been included in the Manchester United squad for their Champions League Group H clash with Braga.

Fletcher did not take part in open training on Tuesday and although Scholes featured in the session at Carrington, both failed to figure on a 20-man squad list for the trip to Portugal.

Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed Fletcher has missed out on account of a cold, while of Scholes he joked: "we're just taking care of an old man!"

Chris Smalling could make a welcome return for United, as he has been named in the travelling party following a broken metatarsal. The former Fulham defender has not featured this season.

Phil Jones, Nemanja Vidic and Shinji Kagawa are all absent from a game that could see United secure their place in the knockout stages.

United face Aston Villa at the weekend and manager Sir Alex Ferguson has suggested he will shuffle his pack for Braga.
