Wilshere waits as Hodgson considers recall

England manager Roy Hodgson is set to announce his squad for next week's friendly against Sweden, with Jack Wilshere in contention for his return to the international fold.

Wilshere, 20, last appeared for England against Switzerland in June 2011 having been sidelined through injury almost ever since, with the midfielder only recently making his comeback for Arsenal.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has expressed his reservations about the youngster being called upon by Hodgson for next Wednesday's friendly against Sweden in Stockholm.

But speaking in The Independent, Wilshere said: "It's up to the England manager. I am sure he will speak to the boss [Arsene Wenger], and the boss and the England manager know best. If they want me to play, I'll play.

"If they decide it's best for me to rest, then I will rest."

Wilshere's Arsenal team-mate Carl Jenkinson could also be named in the squad, after the right-back, who has been capped for Finland Under-21s, impressed for his club this season.

Meanwhile, England captain Steven Gerrard is in line to win his 100th cap for his nation, in what will be the Three Lions' final match of 2012.

Another Liverpool player, Raheem Sterling, 17, is reportedly likely to be named as part of an original England squad for the first time, after he was a late call-up for the World Cup qualifier against Ukraine in September.
